To make sure you order enough food, however, there are some questions you need to ask yourself before placing your order.

What Time of Day is the Event Being Held?

The time of day during which your event will take place can have a large impact on the type and amount of food you’ll want to order. If you’re looking to cut down on the amount of money you spend on catering, consider planning your event for a time of day when people have likely already eaten a meal. For example, if you hold the event at 8:30 PM rather than 7:00 PM, there’s a better chance that your guests will have already eaten before arriving.

On the other hand, if your event will take place during a typical meal time, such as during the early afternoon or evening, then you’ll want to order extra food to ensure there’s enough for everybody to have a meal.

During What Time of Year is the Event Taking Place?

You’ll also want to consider the specific time of year during which your special event will occur. For example, if you’re throwing a party in the middle of the summer, then you’ll probably want to serve cooler, refreshing foods and beverages, such as iced teas, lemonades, salads, and fresh fruit. On the other hand, if you’re holding your event during a cooler time of the year, then warmer foods and beverages (hot tea, coffee, mulled cider, and soups) may be more appropriate.

If you’re throwing a large party, then there’s a good chance that at least one of your guests will have a special dietary restriction. Specifically, you may have guests who are diabetic, vegetarian, or vegan. Consider asking your guests to indicate any dietary restrictions on an RSVP so that you can plan accordingly. You want to make sure that everybody can enjoy a delicious dish that meets their diet at your special event.
